As many of you know, I've been participating in [insanejournal.com profile] daily_deviant since 2007. And, with the exception of the year of cancer, I haven't missed many months.
So I thought I'd compile some wacky statistics and see how that all has shaken out so far.

For me, the big draw of DD is to be able to write pairings and kinks I normally wouldn't. Things like The Fat Lady/Molly Weasley, or Wormtail wanking while in rat form (LMAO). And yes, I even managed copraphagy (scat) once.

Anyway, I figured I'd do some calculations and see just how much I rely on my OTP for DD.
And since I consider Harry/Draco my secondary OTP, I figured I'd throw them into the calculation, too. ;)

Out of 113 total posts, I have written 23 Snarry fics, 9 Harry/Draco, and 4 Drapery. Which means about 20% of the time I write my OTP, H/D is 7%, and Drapery is 3%. That puts me at around 30% overall.
And, considering I often write my OTP for DD when desperate (I call it committing emergency Snarry *g*), that's not too bad, IMO.
FYI, I left out fics with background Snarry (where they are just mentioned as couple, but not the focus of the story).

Writing 70% 'other stuff' counts as being adventurous as far as I'm concerned. *g*

Right, how about you guys?
Especially those of you in DD, let's see your stats. I'm curious!

I am like….90% sure I’m going camping this Friday.

It depends a bit on the weather, but I’m mostly packed, I’ve cooked food that’s currently waiting in the freezer, and I have acquired the third Diane Mott Davidson book to read.

The plan is to leave work early, catch the train to the campground, camp overnight, and in the morning hike out to a different train station further down the line, about a seven-mile trek, to do a longer endurance test than last weekend’s. Then I’ll catch the train home around noon on Saturday.

If something goes wrong, I can catch an evening train home on Friday until eight o’clock, or starting in the morning at 5:30, with little to no exertion. It’s pretty low-risk and I’m well stocked. I don’t have a sleeping pad, but my backpack has a partial one built-in, and I have one arriving tomorrow (though it might be too bulky, we’ll see). And honestly in this heat, I might just sleep on top of my sleeping bag in any case.

Worst case scenario, the campground has heated, lockable shower cubicles with nice big floors. I’ve slept on worse.

Caaaaaaamping! *jazz hands*

I've been sick as a dog for almost a week -- I haven't had a voice since Saturday morning -- so I was "lucky" enough to have coughed myself awake just in time to catch the announcement live via Twitter.

I've really been hoping for a woman of colour as the next Doctor, and I didn't recognise Jodie Whittaker by name, so I felt a weird stab of disappointment and even betrayal when I saw her white hand, coupled with simultaneous excitement that it was clearly a woman's hand.

I still think that a white woman was the easy option, casting-wise, but I've seen Whittaker in a few things -- including the first four episodes of Broadchurch, which I inhaled last night and enjoyed so much I completely forgot about Game of Thrones -- and she's very, very good.

And I also wonder if it would be unfair to an actress of colour, to throw her to the same wolves that drove Leslie Jones off Twitter, while also expecting her to lead a show with (so far) all-white writers. Which is not to excuse the implications of casting a white woman, I just think it might be complicated. Most things are. Whitakker's already been hit with a barrage of misogyny, and I hope the BBC is filtering her mail.

Anyway, I've curated my social media so well that I haven't seen a single friend or acquaintance saying they're opposed to a female Doctor as such.

On the other hand, I've seen a lot of performative finger-wagging, reminding us that this is only a victory for white women (got it, thanks) and that we can't rely on pop culture to save the world (no, really? Good heavens, I had no idea, thank goodness I had you, random Twitter person, to tell us off for being invested in a hobby!).

I guess I'm weary of performative wokeness, and, while everyone's entitled to an opinion, I find a lot of opinions on Doctor Who from people who aren't or haven't been in the fandom ... lack context? Which is sometimes valuable, and sometimes it's just the hot take equivalent of "DID YOU KNOW THAT 'TORCHWOOD' IS AN ANAGRAM OF 'DOCTOR WHO'?"

ANYWAY. Whitakker. I'm looking forward to her run, I'm still holding out hope for Alexander Siddig or Sophie Okonedo as Fourteen (it's never too soon!), people are already complaining that Whitakker is too young and too old, so, like women everywhere, we already know she just can't win.

The second annual Multifandom Drabble Exchange ([community profile] multifandomdrabble) went live yesterday, and I received a gift and a treat:

Summer turns towards Autumn by [archiveofourown.org profile] weakinteraction - The Man in the High Castle (TV), Tagomi and Juliana post-S2. I do wonder what is going to happen in S3 when they eventually meet again, and this is a lovely teaser!

The Visitor by [archiveofourown.org profile] Alona - The Divine Cities series by Robert Jackson Bennett, Mulaghesh gen. I prompted "accidental kitten acquisition" and this made me smile because it's so in character.

I was assigned to write for [archiveofourown.org profile] st_aurafina:

A New Hobby - Lord John series by Diana Gabaldon, Lord John/Stephan von Namtzen (okay, it's really gen, but) in a stealth fusion with an undisclosed fandom. Lord John Grey visits Waldesruh again, and learns about Stephan von Namtzen's latest obsession.

I also wrote a bunch of treats (all G-rated):

Saucy Wench - Hot Sauces (Anthropomorphic), Cholula/ Tapatío - There's a new girl on the shelf.

My Sin - due South (TV), Frannie Vecchio/Maggie McKenzie - Licking the evidence runs in the family.

Fire - Frontier Wolf by Rosemary Sutcliff, Teleri(/Connla) - Everyone in the village said they should wed, with their matching crowns of fiery hair.

The Bicycle Rule - The Giver by Lois Lowry, The Receiver gen - It was one of the few rules that was not taken very seriously and was almost always broken. (The Giver, chapter 2.)

One More Earthly Pleasure - The Witcher 3 videogame (actually for the DLC Hearts of Stone), Shani and Vlodimir - In which Gaunter O'Dimm doesn't banish Vlodimir at midnight.

Aboard the Psi-Ship Foxway - The Raven Cycle by Maggie Stiefvater, gen - 300 Fox Way IN SPAAACE.

Here are links to the main collection and the treats - a lot of tasty bite-sized fandom bits to sample. My favorite so far unfortunately points up the problem with drabbles - that they are so tiny and can only tell a very limited story - because it's a drabble sequence and therefore encompasses a lot more story than a single 100-word chunk can tell. But it's really amazing:

I'm over at MIL's and she's making us watch The Lawrence Welk Show, which is something my grandmother watched when I was a tiny child, and I called it 'The Bubble Show' because there were bubbles at the end of a big band variety show that mostly played jazz songs in the slowest, tamest, whitest 50's way they could, along with an accordion, because polka was important for some reason.

Anyway, there's this couple on, and the lady is singing about how much she loves frankfurter sandwiches, and how she thanks her love for giving her frankfurter sandwiches all night.

And somehow I'M THE ONE BEING ACCUSED OF MY MIND BEING IN THE GUTTER. Mm-hm.

Ugh. Now there's this barbershop quartet on. I hate barbershop quartets. Maybe except for this one. The ginger in this one ('Sonny' Delight?) always has my attention.

Oh good this evil-assed show is over. Now the damn closing theme song is stuck in my head. Uggghggh. Shoot me now.

Pulled out of the notebook and tweaked a little. Stone talking about his favorite neighborhood garden, Glenwood Green Gardens, which started up in the early-to-mid '80's in N. Philly and is still going strong. Not sure I remember what I intended this to be a lead-in to, tbh. I have to see if I can find the box with my not-an-outline in it.

******

The neighborhood was a lot more acceptin’ than I expected about Fen being both this quiet, tall, polite red-haired white guy and a big fuzzy wolfy-lookin' dog. Hel, the people in the neighborhood that said they was scared of dogs would talk to Fen and scratch him behind the ears, after asking if it was okay. I think most folks think he’s just a different kind of faery, and that’s okay, 'cause the other thing would be a lot harder to explain and wouldn’t go over so well.

Patience asked, though. )

I followed a rec from [personal profile] vass in a comment to a post at [personal profile] jamethiel and hply sjot, I have fallen down a rabbit hole! I had seen references to 17776 at ffa but ignored them, because once I realized it wasn't a typo for the musical it turned out to be a multimedia web thingy about football, which is not something I'm interested in.

But it's not about football. Well, I suppose it is, on some level, but it's Calvinball-football, something called football that has one toe still in the contemporary game but "now", in the far far post-quasi-apocalyptic future, is mostly an outrageously inventive pastime for bored immortals, which we are shown through commentary by old spacecraft which have now achieved sentience, including one who has just "awoken" and so has to have everything explained to it by the others.

It is a WIP, apparently updated daily. I am not sure how much is out or how far along I am, but I just finished the Page, Arizona chapter, in which opposing teams become trapped in a canyon with sheer walls and continue battling for thousands of years. (I have been there in real life! I am amused!)

Anyway, if this description intrigues you: https://www.sbnation.com/a/17776-football/

My parents signed me up for Nextdoor, which is like some kind of community-based mini facebook, and I am signed up in their neighborhood, which is (as we have established) The Boondocks.

I don’t mind belonging to their Nextdoor, it means that I will be kept abreast of local news, but also the local news is hilarious.

The latest messages concern a HEATED DISCUSSION about hoof trimming because someone posted asking if anyone knows a farrier who will trim miniature horse hooves, which apparently most farriers have some kind of BASELESS PREJUDICE against according to this poster. Battle lines are quickly being drawn between the various camps including:

Miniature horses don’t need hoof maintenance the way regular horses do
Miniature horses ABSOLUTELY need hoof maintenance you monsters
Farriers who won’t do miniature horse hooves ain’t shit
Farriers who won’t do miniature horse hooves have their reasons
Miniature horses are some bullshit
Everybody shut up about miniature horses

I can’t wait to see who wins. I suspect it will be me.

What I've recently finished reading:

Assassin's Fate by Robin Hobb - I liked the story, appreciated the way the ending called back to other elements of the series (and felt it a solid, satisfying ending), but I am not sure why this book didn't resonate emotionally with me. Perhaps it's because having read the series over such a long span of time, the characters' lives are less fresh and compelling to me. Perhaps it's because this book's ambitious scope in tying together not just the final trilogy but all the Realms of the Elderlings sub-series required so many sub-plots that it seemed an overwhelming brick with too many diversions. I enjoyed reading it, as I enjoyed most of the series (Rain Wilds, ugh) but toward the end I was feeling as though it was more a chore than a delight, and I'm glad I'm finished.

The Magpie Lord by K. J. Charles - Better than the average m/m novel, but that's a low bar. The magic is interesting (and the best part of the book); the plotting is pretty good, though the ending is a bit abrupt, with a sudden influx of new characters whose villainy could have been set up better through the narrative; the romance is all right, though a bit too heavy on the size-difference kink for my taste. I'm not particularly inclined to seek out the rest of the series, though I have to say I'm intrigued by Stephen's partner Esther, who was mentioned but didn't actually appear in the story.

Dungeons & Dreamers: A Story of how Computer Games Created a Global Community by Brad King and John Borland - This readable, engaging book traces the development of multi-user computer games and non-game shared social spaces (such as Second Life) from their roots in tabletop gaming and D&D, through text adventure and then graphic action/adventure games, to current (as of writing, which is not current at all) massively networked games. I found the early chapters particularly interesting because I, too, was a D&D geek and gamer in the late 70s/early 80s (though I drifted away after early graphical games such as Spacewar, and text games Zork and Advent and their progeny); it was like reading the book equivalent of the TV series Halt and Catch Fire, the underlying stories of things which I experienced as a casual user at the time.

There is certainly more focus on certain people and game companies than others, but this doesn't purport to be a complete history of games and gaming. Instead this focus (which wavers at times, admittedly) serves to build the thesis that (most) people like narrative and social interactions, even while killing monsters. I think it's a reasonable view, though perhaps it leaves out the meta aspect of people who like to play single-player games (which I imagine are the majority of games available) but who then congregate on Reddit and other forums to share their experiences and screenshots. Anyway, recommended if you have an interest in this sort of thing.

What I'm reading now:

Right now I'm down to my audiobook, Plus One by Elizabeth Fama, which I am a little more than halfway through. I'm finding it surprisingly interesting and enjoyable for YA dystopian SF. I mentioned last week that I thought I'd read a short story with a similar premise, of people split into night people and day people, and while browsing the Goodreads reviews I saw one person mention that it was sort of based on a book called The Day Boy and the Night Girl, which is an 1882 fairy tale novel by George MacDonald. I checked it out on Wikipedia and while it sounds interesting, it's not the story I was thinking of.

What I'm reading next:

I might have to read the fourth Expanse book, because B keeps blathering about the books while we watch the show. He also has been reading the Wayward Pines books and thinks I should read them. (The author is a friend of a friend.) I have some various random stuff in ebook I ought to read sometime, things I've downloaded through Instafreebie (though so far I have not been impressed), through the Tor free ebook series, and through other promotions.

What I'm watching now:

We are 6/10 through S2 of The Expanse! It is weird to me how the TV seasons don't match up with the books very well. The things I think of as being the important stuff that happened in the second book have not even occurred yet (well, one of them finally did in E6). What a pretty show, though.

What I'm watching next:

I heard a rumor that Winter is Coming. Huh, looks like summer to me.

Had a series of interviews that went really well; one of the managers said as much, and I'm hoping to hear back from the company by the end of the week.

In case you wanted to feel old today, please be advised that Miss Mousie turned 19 over the weekend.

Acknowledged that I've essentially been hermitting, which is not wrong, but I like the idea of having people over. So I bothered some ex-coworkers and hopefully, we'll hang out here at the end of the month. And I'm threatening to have my parents and lil' sis and her spouse over for dinner eventually, and I still have a few smaller projects that I'd like to get wrapped up. So of course, I stalled out and fixated on tablecloths for a week. As you do (no really, brain. WTF?).stuff. shopping. chaos. taxi cab prophets and the end times. )

Anyway, so the twins started Sheriff Youth Week yesterday, with the rest of a pack of a 160 117 kids, and W had a pretty good chuckle dropping them off, as true to form the sergeants started in right away:

"WE DON'T HAVE TIME TO WAIT FOR PEOPLE LIKE YOU! TELL YOUR DAD GOODBYE. DON'T FORGET TO TELL YOUR DAD YOU LOVE HIM"

D!T02: They're really trying to tone it down, like no cusses or anything. It's kinda funny. They're calling us Pukes. As in "Line up in rows of 4. When I look at you pukes, I only wanna see one puke!'

D!T01: I know they know that we know and use all those words, but they're still trying really hard. I respect that.

D!T02: We learned about internet safety, and gangs, and I learned more gang signs. Also, you know, I can really see the appeal of gangs? Like I probably shouldn't. But I really do.

Today it was:

D!T02: I got to handcuff a cop today! After my team put him on the ground! XD

D!T01: I got to bull rush a cop with a tower shield! XD

W: *pause* They're teaching you how to riot?

D!T01: No! We were the arrest team! I had the tower shield!

Apparently, D!T02 has been dubbed Care Bear by one of the sergeants (they're all obtaining nicknames at a rapid rate). She and/or D!T01 are also The Future President (they're not sure if the boys calling them this have figured out which one they're referring to), which seems to be rather long for a nickname really.

After picking them up today, we got caught in the pouring rain, got cleaned up, had dinner, and then we met up with their history teacher and a handful of other students at an ice cream shop because he promised them that he'd buy ice cream for anyone that got a 5 on their AP tests. The twins alternated between 5s and 4s on their U.S. History and English tests. So we all went and Mousie, W and I brought our own ice cream.

Not a bad day, all in all. I got the house insurance thing sorted, I found a box full of art, two pieces of which are even up on walls (many of the rest are still leaning against the walls while I figure out where I want things to go, and will probably remain leaning against them for a few weeks until I get Exasperated with having to move them to sweep and dust). The yard is slowly but surely coming along. I can still smell fresh dirt through the open window. It's quite pleasant.

I didn't sign up, but I looked through the collection to read stories in fandoms I know, and there are three that are really quite good and you should read them, too, if you know these fandoms:

Good and Bad Alike (We Keep Meeting) (1609 words) by [archiveofourown.org profile] sevendeadlyfun

Fandom: Hamilton - Miranda
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Characters: Thomas Jefferson, Angelica Schuyler
Summary: He does not meet her at Versailles. No one, the Duc D’Orlean proclaims, meets anyone at Versailles. Angelica and Jefferson meet in Paris. They part in America.

I love the historical details, and Angelica comes alive here as the central character in her own story.

Peat Smoke Rising (3065 words) by [archiveofourown.org profile] feroxargentea
Fandom: The Eagle of the Ninth - Rosemary Sutcliff, The Eagle | The Eagle of the Ninth - All Media Types
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Marcus Flavius Aquila/Esca Mac Cunoval
Characters: Esca Mac Cunoval, Marcus Flavius Aquila
Additional Tags: book canon, Missing Scene, Wilderness, Hiking, Hurt/Comfort, Sharing Body Heat, canonically ambiguous relationship
Summary: \Peat smoke rising. Two worlds entwined.

I really like this gentle story; the language evokes the book-language without feeling like pastiche, with lovely Sutcliffian scenery and descriptive details.

strawberries and sunlight (3252 words) by [archiveofourown.org profile] polkadot
Fandom: Pride and Prejudice - Jane Austen
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Catherine Bennet/Georgiana Darcy
Characters: Catherine Bennet, Georgiana Darcy
Additional Tags: Falling In Love, Flirting, Declarations Of Love
Summary: It was some four months since Kitty had come to stay at Pemberley, when she found to her great astonishment that she had not thought of young officers in a fortnight.

Kitty's slow maturity as she moves away from Lydia's orbit to Georgiana's, and then her examination of that change in herself, is lovely to see. And Georgiana's obviously blossoming here as well, from the shy and withdrawn girl in the novel to someone who has found what she wants and is patiently waiting for Kitty to figure it out. This is probably my favorite of the stories I read from this fest.

I just got home and the apartment REEKS of burnt toast. Which is weird since a) nothing is on fire (I checked), b) I haven’t even MADE toast in like a week, c) it didn’t smell like that this morning when I got home from running, and d) the smell is most intense when standing on my welcome mat just inside the door.

I think Ghost is mad at me. They often express themselves with smells near the doorway. But I haven’t even done anything! The designated Ghost Drawer in the card catalogue shelf (under G, for Ghost) is open and everything, I checked.

I cannot order you a pizza tonight, Ghost, I already have grocery delivery coming and I don’t want the Domino’s guy and the Peapod guy to make it awkward. We’ll have pizza on Thursday.

Good morning everyone, and welcome to Radio Free Monday! It's a brief one today, which I appreciate given I'm just getting back from vacation.

Ways to Give:

[tumblr.com profile] readera's partner, J, has been in the ER multiple times in the past three months, and their finances are very strained because of it. They're raising $300-$500 for transportation costs and medicine; you can read more here; they're currently working to add a donation link, so I would bookmark and check back in a day or two.

[tumblr.com profile] rilee16 is struggling to cover medical expenses after two head injuries last year, and has a fundraiser running to cover living expenses, previous medical bills, and a recent rent increase. You can read more and help out here.

Help For Free:

[tumblr.com profile] steverogersandhiscyborglovers linked to a survey by the Vatican, which is asking for information about the attitudes and values of 16-29 year olds of all faiths, worldwide; it's available in Italian, English, German, Spanish, French, and Portuguese. This is the first time the Vatican has put out an online survey and it's an opportunity to share your opinions with the church (even if the demographic gathering is a little limited; they only offer "male" and "female" options for gender). You can take the survey here.

And this has been Radio Free Monday! Thank you for your time. You can post items for my attention at the Radio Free Monday submissions form. If you're not sure how to proceed, here is a little more about what I do and how you can help (or ask for help!). If you're new to fundraising, you may want to check out my guide to fundraising here.

I really really wanna write? But I've got nuthin'.

All that stuff the meme stirred up, and half my stories are in mid-arc, but all of sudden, I got no hook. I might need to do a bit of nonfic reading. There's a ton of stuff I've unpacked that's on the shelves and I haven't touched 'em.

But I don't wanna read. I wanna write something I wanna read. I suppose I could go about the process of taking notebook bits and ordering them for posting to s&f, or I can go through my list of sparks that I filed away to write later, or I can see if I can figure out where my bingo card went? Hrmm.
